Nuru ya Binti, meaning "Light of the Girl" in Swahili, was born from a shared vision: to empower young people in Tanzania, particularly girls and young women, to reach their full potential.
In 2016, Sheila Mchamba joined the Data Lab Innovation Challenge, which sought ideas to reduce HIV infections and unplanned pregnancies among young girls and teenage mothers. The initial idea was to create TV programs guiding children on how to handle challenges that put them at risk of HIV or unplanned pregnancies. Sheila even created a demo episode but faced challenges in securing airtime on television. As time passed, the idea evolved to better meet the needs of the community. Recognizing the limitations of media reach and the importance of direct engagement, the focus shifted towards creating a more hands-on approach. This shift in strategy led to the founding of Nuru ya Binti in 2024.
We have raised awareness about the deficiencies in the judicial system concerning the handling of rape and molestation cases involving children. This advocacy was highlighted during last year’s Day of the African Child.
We launched the “We Are the Solution to Our Own Cause” campaign, directly involving women in combating climate change by protecting their surrounding environment.
Through our “NO MORE BLOOD STAINS” campaign, we distributed washable pads to 86 needy children. This initiative aims to pressure the government to provide free sanitary pads to school girls.

Tanzania faces complex challenges that disproportionately impact young people. Poverty, lack of education, and harmful social norms can limit their opportunities. Nuru ya Binti addresses these challenges head-on by providing:
– Safe spaces for young people to learn, grow, and build confidence.
– Essential life skills training in financial literacy, vocational skills, and social responsibility.
– Educational support to ensure young people stay in school and reach their full academic potential.
– Advocacy for policies that promote youth empowerment and well-being.
The impact of our work is evident in the transformed lives of the young people we serve. For example, [Share a brief and impactful story of how Nuru ya Binti has positively impacted a young person’s life].
